That last sentence is the thing worth knowing before you read any further. A search of Amazon’s own job board for data center cabling technician returns zero results. The same board returns nine results for cable installation technician, which is what Amazon calls the job.

This page is built only on figures that an employer, a government agency or a certifying body printed itself. Every band below has a requisition number beside it and a date it was read.

A cabling technician pulls, dresses, terminates and tests the copper and fiber that carries traffic between servers, switches and the carrier handoff. It is paid by the hour almost everywhere, so the hourly rate is the number that matters.

Amazon Pays One Rate for This Job in Four States, and the Experience Bar Does Not Move It

Four Amazon requisitions, four states, one band to the cent: 27.98 to 48.99 USD hourly in Chantilly Virginia, Umatilla Oregon, Berwick Pennsylvania and Sparks Nevada.

The interesting part is not the geography. It is what Amazon asks for at that price.

One posting wants a diploma and nothing else. Another wants three years of two different skills. Both pay the same floor and the same ceiling.

What that tells you as a candidate is practical. The floor is not where a beginner sits and the ceiling is not where a veteran sits. The band is one band for the title, and where you land inside a $21.01 spread is settled in the conversation, not by the posting. Ask which point of the band the offer sits at, and ask what moves it.

It also means the advice to chase a higher paying metro does not hold for this trade at this employer. Northern Virginia, rural Oregon, small town Pennsylvania and northern Nevada are priced identically.

Structured Cabling Technician Salary

Structured cabling is what the industry actually calls this trade. It means the standardised copper and fiber system that runs between the entrance facility, the main distribution area and the equipment racks, built to a published standard rather than run ad hoc.

One employer in this research posts that exact title. Congruex lists a Structured Cabling Technician in Columbus, Ohio, Job ID 27731421, asking a minimum of two years of structured cabling installation experience. It prints no pay figure.

That matters because the same company, in the same city, in the same week, does print a figure for its fiber splicing role: $30.00 to $50.00 an hour on Job ID 27786238. Ohio has no law forcing either one. Congruex chose to publish one rate and not the other.

The unpriced structured cabling posting is also the only one found anywhere in this research that names BICSI, listing Installer 1, Installer 2 or Technician as preferred.

So the honest answer to what a structured cabling technician earns is that the employers using that exact title are the ones least likely to print a number. The closest priced comparison is the fiber work beside it.

Network Cabling Technician Salary

Network cabling technician is the phrasing that comes closest to what Amazon actually hires. Its live titles are Network Cable Installation Technician and Data Center Network Deploy Technician, both at 27.98 to 48.99 USD an hour.

The deploy side of the job leans further toward networking than cable pulling. Requisition 10562271 asks for computer networking experience on top of hardware repair, and its preferred qualifications name industry certifications including BICSI, CompTIA and Network+. The cable installation postings ask for cabling or deployment experience and name CompTIA and Network+ without BICSI.

Both sit in the same pay band. Adding a networking requirement did not add a cent to the posted rate at this employer.

Who Actually Hires Data Center Cabling Technicians

A surprising answer came out of this research: mostly not the data center operators.

Four operator job boards were enumerated in full on October 2, 2026. T5 Data Centers, Serverfarm, Cologix and Megaport list roughly 208 open positions between them. Not one is a cabling, structured cabling or low voltage title. Those boards are full of critical facilities technicians, data center technicians and electricians.

That is a zero for those four boards on those search terms, not proof the work does not exist elsewhere. What it points to is the structure of the industry: cabling is bought in. The operator owns the building, a specialty contractor installs the cable plant.

The federal data says the same thing in a different way. The BLS industry cross-tab for computing infrastructure providers, data processing, web hosting and related services lists computer network architects, network administrators, support specialists, maintenance workers and security guards. It shows no telecommunications installer and no electrician employment inside that industry classification at all. Those trades are counted under specialty trade contractors instead.

Practically, that means your employer is likely to be a contractor: Congruex, or one of the larger network build firms. Your paycheck follows the contractor market, not the hyperscaler pay scale.

What the Federal Data Says, and What It Cannot Say

There is no government job code for a cabling technician. No SOC code exists for cabling, low voltage or fiber installation as its own occupation.

The closest federal benchmark is telecommunications technicians, and that profile changed on August 27, 2026. It now bundles three occupation codes together, so it is broader than the inside-plant installer most cabling technicians resemble.

The contradiction nobody writes about

On the same day, in the same projections round, BLS published two numbers that point in opposite directions.

The industry that runs data centers, classified as computing infrastructure providers, data processing, web hosting and related services, is projected to grow 25.1 percent and add 120,400 jobs between 2025 and 2035. The occupation closest to cabling work is projected to shrink 3 percent over exactly the same decade.

Both can be true. The buildings multiply, and the installer occupation that wires them is counted mostly outside that industry and is shrinking on a national basis that includes a lot of declining telephone and cable work. The useful signal for a candidate is the 20,300 openings a year, which is churn: people leaving the trade, not new seats being added.

A page that tells you this field is booming because data centers are booming is skipping a step. The honest version is that the work is there, the occupation is not growing, and the openings come mostly from turnover.

What Cabling Certifications Cost, and What They Are Worth

Every certification price below came off the issuer’s own fee page on October 2, 2026. So did every answer to the question of what the credential adds to your pay.

That second answer is short. None of the three issuers publishes a pay premium for any cabling credential. Not BICSI, not the Fiber Optic Association, not ETA International. They publish a cost.

Each BICSI exam price includes the first attempt. A retake at the installer tier is $135 for members and $200 for non-members. BICSI publishes no course price on any of these credential pages, and every page states that the exam is not included in the course fee.

The price gap is the part worth acting on. ETA’s Data Cabling Installer is $155 and runs four years. BICSI’s Installer 2, Copper is $400 for a non-member and runs three. That is roughly 2.6 times the price for a shorter term, covering much the same ground. BICSI carries far more name recognition with specifiers and designers, which is a real reason to pay more, but it is a reason, not a measured return.

About the pay bump you have read about

BICSI prints one dollar figure anywhere near the subject of pay. It is a named testimonial on the Installer 2, Optical Fiber page from James R. Bowles, who says he saw a $10,000 annual increase in pay.

Read the sentence carefully and it describes a promotion to Information Systems Specialist 2, not a raise for holding a credential. One person, one promotion, one state employer. It is not a premium figure and this page will not present it as one.

BLS is just as blunt. Its only sentence about certification in this occupation reads: “Manufacturer or employer-provided certification may be helpful for some telecom technicians.” It names no cabling certification at all.

What the job postings show is more useful than any premium claim. Across every posting read for this page, OSHA 10 was the only credential that appeared as required. BICSI appeared exactly once, as preferred. FOA appeared as preferred. A valid driver’s licence was a hard requirement more often than any technical certification.

Cabling Compared With the Trades Working Beside It

The verdict: the outside plant line work pays about $10,440 more at the median than the inside plant installation that data center cabling most resembles. The gap is real and it is the clearest argument for adding fiber and outside plant skill rather than staying purely inside the building.

Amazon’s band straddles the whole picture. Its floor of 27.98 an hour sits near the bottom quarter of the trade and its ceiling of 48.99 sits above the line installer median. Same posting, both ends.

How to Move Up Inside the Band

The band is wide and the posting will not tell you where you land in it. These are the levers the published evidence actually supports.

Get the fiber side, not just the copper side. Line and outside plant work carries the higher federal median, $74,330 against $63,890. Congruex’s priced postings are fiber splicing roles, and its one unpriced posting is the pure structured cabling role.

Take the cheap credential first. ETA’s Data Cabling Installer is $155 for four years. If money is tight, that is the lowest cost way to put a verifiable credential on a resume, and OSHA 10 is the one thing postings actually require.

Chase the data center premium where it is printed. The single highest floor found in this research, $35.00 an hour, sits on the only posting that carries both “data center” and a cabling trade in its title. Specialising reads on the posting itself.

Count travel as pay. The Salt Lake City role pays $150 daily on top of the hourly rate and a $1,000 sign-on bonus. Over a long deployment that changes the arithmetic more than two dollars an hour would.

Ask where in the band the offer sits. With a $21.01 spread at Amazon and a $20.00 spread at Congruex, the midpoint of the band describes nobody. The question that matters in the call is what moves you up it and how long that takes.
