27 Brutal Data Center Operations Manager Interview Questions
Glassdoor has collected 27 reported interview questions for data center operations manager roles across 12 companies, and 99 more under the broader data center manager title across 42 companies.
Read enough of them and a pattern shows up fast: the technical questions are the easy half.
The half that kills candidates is the leadership half.
Uptime Institute’s Global Data Center Survey 2025 ranked operations management as the job category with the most serious skills gap, cited by 39% of operators, the first year management topped that list.
Hiring panels know it, and they compensate by grinding harder on the people questions.
This guide covers the interview format, the technical questions, the behavioral questions, the red flags in the process, and the salary numbers you need before you talk money.

Data Center Operations Manager Interview Questions: what the process looks like
A data center operations manager owns uptime, shift coverage, maintenance execution, and team performance for one or more live sites, reporting into site or regional operations leadership.
The interview reflects that split: roughly half tests whether you know the plant, and half tests whether you can run people at 3 a.m. when the plant misbehaves.
| Stage | Who runs it | Length | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recruiter screen | Talent acquisition | 20-30 min | Comp expectations, site location, shift model, visa status |
| Hiring manager call | Site director or regional ops lead | 45-60 min | Site count, headcount, critical load, uptime record |
| Technical panel | Chief engineer, facility lead | 60 min | Power, cooling, procedure discipline, incident command |
| Behavioral loop | Cross-functional panel | 4-5 rounds, 45-60 min each | Conflict, coaching, hiring, decisions under pressure |
| Debrief | Panel plus hiring committee | Not candidate-facing | Consensus decision |
Amazon runs the most structured version: a loop of 4 to 5 back-to-back interviews of 45 to 60 minutes, each interviewer assigned specific Leadership Principles to test, with one Bar Raiser from outside the hiring team who holds veto power over the offer.
Microsoft, Equinix, and Digital Realty run leaner panels, but the sequence is similar and the timeline runs three to six weeks from first call to offer.
Technical questions you will get
Panels are checking one thing here: whether your knowledge came from running a floor or from reading about one.
1. Walk me through how your team writes and approves a MOP. Name the review chain, the peer check, and who has authority to stop the work. Say what happens when the MOP does not match the field.
2. Explain N+1, 2N, and 2N+1, and tell me which one you have actually operated. Definitions take ten seconds. The rest of the answer is the concessions you made during maintenance windows on each topology.
3. A UPS module transfers to bypass at 2 a.m. What are your first three moves? Uptime Institute’s Annual Outage Analysis 2025 found power remains the leading cause of impactful outages at 45% of incidents, most often traced to UPS issues. Panels want: confirm load is carried, protect the people, then diagnose.
4. What is your site PUE and what did you do to move it? Uptime Institute reports average PUE has sat near 1.5 for six straight years, so a candidate claiming a big improvement gets follow-up questions. Bring the before number, the change you made, and the after number.
5. Your generator fails a load bank test the week before a customer audit. What now? This tests whether you tell the customer early or hide it until Friday.
6. Which DCIM platform have you run, and what did it actually give you? Name it. Nlyte, Sunbird, and Schneider Electric’s EcoStruxure all show up in reported interviews, and “we had a dashboard nobody opened” is a more credible answer than a feature list.
7. Describe your change management process on a live floor. Uptime Institute found nearly 40% of organizations suffered a major outage caused by human error over the past three years, and 85% of those traced to staff not following procedures or to flaws in the procedures themselves. Your answer to this question is the answer to that statistic.
8. What is your preventive maintenance completion rate, and how do you track it? A real number beats a philosophy. If it was 87%, say 87% and explain the 13%.
9. Explain kW versus kVA, and why it matters on your floor. Basic, and still used as a screen.
10. How do you handle a chilled water loop issue during a heat event? ASHRAE TC 9.9 thermal limits are the reference panels expect you to cite.
11. Walk me through your last root cause analysis. They want the timeline, the contributing factors, and the procedural change it produced.
Behavioral and leadership questions
This is where offers are won and lost.
Nearly two-thirds of operators told Uptime Institute they struggle to retain staff, find qualified candidates, or both: 46% report difficulty filling vacant roles and 37% report retention problems.
Every question below is really asking whether you can keep a team.
12. Tell me about a time a technician on your team caused an incident. Own it, do not name and blame, and land on what changed in training or procedure.
13. Tell me about a time you disagreed with an engineering decision on your site. Amazon maps this to Have Backbone; Disagree and Commit. The story needs both halves: you pushed, then you executed.
14. How have you handled an underperformer? Panels want the coaching timeline, the documentation, and the outcome, including the ones you moved out.
15. Tell me about a hire you got wrong. Do not claim you never have.
16. Describe a time you gave a customer bad news. Colocation operators weight this heavily because your face is the SLA.
17. Tell me about a time you missed an SLA. Uptime Institute reports one in ten outages still cause serious or severe disruption, so nobody believes the candidate with a perfect record.
18. How do you keep a night shift engaged? Specifics only: rotation design, training time, promotion history off nights.
19. Tell me about a time you stopped work for safety. NFPA 70E arc flash boundaries and lockout/tagout are fair territory here.
20. Tell me about a time you had to do more with a frozen headcount. Very common in 2026 given the staffing squeeze.
21. How did you onboard your last new technician? Tests whether you build people or just consume them.
Structure every one with STAR: situation, task, action, result. Amazon interviewers compare notes after the loop, so bring 8 to 10 distinct stories and never reuse one.

Questions to ask your interviewer
22. What is this site’s uptime record over the last 24 months, and what caused the last event?
23. What is my headcount, my current vacancy count, and how long have those roles been open?
24. Who writes and approves MOPs today, and how often are they reviewed?
25. What is the on-call rotation, and how often does the ops manager get pulled in personally?
26. What does the promotion path from this seat look like, and who did it last?
27. What is the capital plan for this site over the next 24 months?
The vacancy question is the one that pays. A site sitting on four open technician roles for eight months is telling you exactly what your first year looks like.
Red flags in the hiring process
A panel with no chief engineer or facility lead in it means the technical bar is being set by people who cannot judge it.
An interviewer who cannot state the site’s uptime record from memory is a signal that nobody is measuring what you will be judged on.
A refusal to share the comp band after two rounds usually means the band is below market and they are hoping you anchor low.
Heavy focus on “wearing many hats” with a thin headcount plan means the last person left for a reason.
No mention of procedure review anywhere in the loop means the risk is sitting there waiting for you.
How to negotiate the offer
Walk in with three numbers, not one.
| Source | US figure (2026) | Reported range |
|---|---|---|
| Glassdoor | $151,794 average total pay | $117,724 to $198,421 |
| ZipRecruiter | $155,686 average | Posted listings, January 2026 |
| Salary.com | $137,200 average base | Senior manager $165,601, director $187,096 |
| PayScale | $100,590 average base | Up to $144,000 |
| BLS, computer and information systems managers | $171,200 median | May 2024 national data |
The spread is wide because the title covers both a first-time people leader at a single regional site and a hyperscale campus lead in Northern Virginia or Santa Clara running three shifts.
Anchor on the aggregator that matches your scope.
BLS projects 15% employment growth for computer and information systems managers from 2024 to 2034, roughly 55,600 openings a year, and Uptime Institute’s data says operations management is the hardest category in the industry to staff.

Your negotiating position is that sentence: they have an open req in the category with the worst skills gap in the business.
Push on base first, then on the on-call differential and the bonus target.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the data center operations manager interview process take?
Three to six weeks from recruiter screen to offer at most operators. Amazon’s loop structure adds a debrief cycle, so hyperscaler timelines run longer, often five to eight weeks including scheduling delays.
Do you need a degree to be a data center operations manager?
No. Most operators accept military technical experience, an electrical or mechanical trade background, or a critical facilities technician track record instead. BLS lists a bachelor’s degree as typical for computer and information systems managers, but data center operations hires on plant experience and leadership evidence first.
Which certifications help most in the interview?
Uptime Institute’s Accredited Operations Specialist and the EPI Certified Data Centre Professional (CDCP) track carry the most weight with operations panels, because both signal procedure discipline rather than product knowledge. ITIL shows up in enterprise and managed services interviews. Vendor certifications matter less at manager level.
What to do next
Pick your five hardest stories from the behavioral list and write them out in STAR format this week, with real numbers in the result line.
Then nail the three technical answers panels drill hardest: your MOP approval chain, your last root cause analysis, and your PM completion rate.
Bring the vacancy question to every interview, because the answer tells you more about the job than the job description does.
