Data Center Commissioning Engineer Salary 2026: What the Postings Actually Print

Every pay figure on this page comes from a live job posting with its requisition number printed beside it, from a government agency, or from a certifying body’s own fee page. No figure came from a crowd-sourced salary site.

That matters more on this job than on most. There is no federal occupation code for commissioning at any level, so nobody publishes a national average for it. What does get published is the band the employer prints on the posting, and those bands turn out to be far more informative than an average would be.

Data center commissioning engineer salary: the key numbers

The finding: Amazon dropped the certification requirement and the pay band did not move

Amazon has two Commissioning Engineer requisitions live in Herndon, Virginia right now. Same city. Same three year experience bar. Same posted band, to the dollar. One of them requires a commissioning certification and a bachelor’s degree. The other lists the certification as optional and asks for no degree at all.

Two requirements came off the required list. A commissioning certification, and an engineering degree. The pay band did not move by one dollar.

Both postings were opened and read directly for this page, not taken from a summary. The exact line that moved reads: NETA or ASHRAE certification or commissioning specific education courses. On 10470526 it sits under BASIC QUALIFICATIONS. On 10551977 the identical sentence sits under PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS.

That is worth sitting with, because the commissioning trade press is built on the opposite claim. The usual line is that a certification adds a specific dollar amount to your base. Here is the largest data center employer in the world, in the densest data center market in the world, publishing the same band whether it demands the credential or merely likes it.

One pair of requisitions is not a law of nature. What it does do is put the burden of proof back where it belongs. Anyone claiming a certification premium for this job now has to produce two postings that differ only by the credential and show a gap. We could not find one.

What Amazon pays a commissioning engineer, by experience bar

Sixteen Amazon commissioning requisitions with printed bands were read on September 24, 2026. Sorting them by the years asked for in BASIC QUALIFICATIONS produces a clean ladder. Sorting them by city does not.

Twelve of the sixteen requisitions carry the same $160,000 ceiling. The floor is what moves, and it moves with the years asked for.

Northern Virginia is the most expensive data center market in the country and it carries Amazon’s lower commissioning floor, $96,600, while Avondale, Arizona and Atlanta, Georgia carry the higher one at $116,800. A cost of living adjustment would move both ends of the band. This moves only the floor, and the floor tracks the experience bar. Read the years before reading anything geographic into a band. Canton, Mississippi, requisition 10421530, is the one commissioning engineer posting whose ceiling is not $160,000. It prints $105,100 to $157,300. That is the honest exception and it is printed here rather than smoothed away.

Where Amazon posts no commissioning role at all

Three searches returned zero jobs on amazon.jobs: commissioning roles in Washington state, commissioning roles in Oregon as a standalone posting, and any role titled commissioning technician. A fourth returned zero for any principal commissioning title. Those are zeros for those exact phrases on that board on that day, not proof the work does not exist under another name. The board’s own search returns eight to eleven job objects per query no matter what limit you ask for, so every list here is a floor, not a census.

Outside the United States, Amazon posts commissioning roles in London, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Tokyo and prints no pay figure on any of them.

What the third party firms pay, and the one that pays more to start

The employer side of this job splits in two. Owners such as Amazon hire commissioning engineers onto their own payroll. Third party firms sell commissioning as a service and staff it from their own bench. The bands differ, and so does the shape of them.

The data center work pays more to start and less at the top

CAI posts both kinds of commissioning role on the same board, on the same day, under the same company. Its data center roles start $11,300 higher than its general buildings roles and stop $22,700 lower.

Data center commissioning buys you a higher entry price and a shorter runway. General buildings commissioning starts lower and pays more at the top of the band. If you are weighing a move into data centers from another kind of building, that trade is the thing to weigh, and it is visible on one employer’s own postings rather than inferred.

Notice which set of postings names the certifications. It is the general buildings roles, not the data center roles.

Commissioning engineer or commissioning agent: who uses which title

These are not two names for one job market. The title tracks the kind of firm doing the hiring.

Syska Hennessy is the largest MEP name in this set and it runs zero postings titled Commissioning Engineer across its whole live board. It says Commissioning Agent. DLR Group says Commissioning Authority. Amazon and CAI say Commissioning Engineer.

What a commissioning certification actually costs

Four credentials get named around this job, they come from four different bodies, and two of them are routinely credited to the wrong one. Every fee below comes from the issuer’s own published page.

The domain matters here. The AABC Commissioning Group publishes at commissioning.org. The address acg.org belongs to the Association for Corporate Growth, an unrelated body. Does any issuer publish a salary premium? No.

ACG, BCCB, ASHRAE, Uptime and NETA publish handbooks, curricula, prerequisites and fee schedules. Not one of them publishes a salary figure, an earnings premium or a pay uplift for holding its credential.

The closest thing to one is an ASHRAE survey result that gets misread constantly. ASHRAE’s value of certification page reports that 51 percent of respondents to its 2025 survey agreed with the statement My earning power has increased. That is a share of people who agreed with a sentence. It is not a 51 percent raise, and it carries no dollar amount.

Amazon’s own postings point the same way. Across every commissioning requisition read for this page, the strings CxA, CCP and BCxP appear zero times. Amazon names NETA or ASHRAE on three requisitions and a Professional Engineer licence on six, and the PE is preferred on every one of them, never required.

Two adjacent safety credentials do come up as expectations on live electrical work: OSHA 30 for data centers and NFPA 70E certification. Those are site access and safety requirements rather than pay levers.

Why there is no national average for a data center commissioning engineer

The federal Standard Occupational Classification is the system that decides which jobs get measured. The word commissioning appears in no occupation title and in no occupation definition anywhere in it, at any level of the hierarchy. No major group, no minor group, no broad occupation, no detailed occupation.

So there is no Bureau of Labor Statistics wage for this job, and any figure presented as one is wrong by construction. What BLS does publish is the wage for the engineering occupations commissioning work is absorbed into.

Those pages carry a Last Modified date of August 27, 2026. They describe electrical and mechanical engineers as a whole, most of whom have never set foot in a data center, so treat them as the surrounding wage landscape rather than as this job’s pay. The one figure BLS does publish about this industry is real and is worth keeping straight. Data processing, hosting and related services, NAICS 518, is projected to grow 25.1 percent and add 120,400 jobs between 2025 and 2035. That is the industry, not the occupation. Travel pay and per diem, with the actual federal numbers

Commissioning is travel work. Per diem gets quoted loosely in this field, usually as a round number somewhere between $150 and $250 a day, with the claim that it is tax free up to federal limits. The federal limits are published and they are lower than that.

Fiscal 2027 covers travel on or after October 1, 2026. The standard rate across most of the country is $181 a day, so a flat $200 a day stipend is above the federal ceiling in most places and the portion above it is not automatically tax free. Even Loudoun County, the densest data center county on earth, tops out at $201. Check the GSA per diem rate tables for the county you are actually working in, and check with your own tax adviser before treating any of it as untaxed.

Two readings of one job posting, and why a band you find online may not be the band

Each endpoint was stable across repeated reads. They simply disagree with each other. The same cross check run against DLR Group’s and Olsson’s postings on the same platform matched to the dollar every time, so this is one employer’s data rather than a platform fault.

The practical lesson for anyone pricing a job: the floor is the number both surfaces agreed on in every case here. Ceilings drifted. If you are quoting a band back to a recruiter, quote the floor and ask them to confirm the top in writing. The three requisitions above are not cited anywhere else on this page for exactly that reason.

What we could not verify

• A national average for this job. No federal occupation code exists for commissioning, so no government figure exists to cite.
• A certification salary premium. No issuer publishes one. No pair of otherwise identical postings showed one. The strongest evidence available points the other way.
• Any contract or day rate. No employer prints an hourly contract rate or a day rate on a posting. Rates quoted elsewhere trace to anonymous industry conversation, which is not a source.
• Bonus, sign-on, retention and overtime figures. Amazon states on every posting that its package includes sign-on payments and restricted stock units, and prints no amount for either. No other employer read here printed one.
• Shift differential and on call pay. Not printed on a single posting read for this page, or for the four related salary pages before it.
• Microsoft, Google, Meta, Equinix and Digital Realty commissioning bands. Microsoft’s and Meta’s boards block automated reads, Google’s careers site returned a hard rate limit on the first attempt, and Equinix’s own front end serves an empty body. No band for any of them is claimed here.
• Bureau Veritas bands. Bureau Veritas has fourteen commissioning engineer postings live, including a run of them in McLean, Virginia, and prints no pay range on any posting read. The gap is noted rather than filled.
• An independent survey of this occupation. The one industry salary survey that covers commissioning is published by a recruitment agency, recruits its respondents by email, telephone and social media, and folds in the agency’s own placement data. That is a self-selected sample, so no figure from it appears on this page.

Is the CxA certification worth it for salary growth? No issuer publishes a salary premium for it, and Amazon posts the same band on two Herndon requisitions that differ only in whether a certification is required. The credential opens doors at design and architecture firms, where DLR Group makes it a hard requirement at senior level. Price it as access, not as a raise.

What does a CxA certification cost? The AABC Commissioning Group charges $350 for an employee of a certified member company and $2,500 for everyone else, plus an annual fee of $200 or $2,500 on the same split. A non-member individual therefore pays about $5,000 in year one.

Do commissioning engineers need a professional engineer licence? Not usually. Across every Amazon commissioning requisition read for this page the PE appears six times and is listed as preferred on all six, never required. One Syska Hennessy role requires a PE or a CXAP, and it is a practice leadership job asking for twelve years plus.

Which city pays data center commissioning engineers the most? The postings do not support a city ranking. Amazon’s lower floor of $96,600 sits in Northern Virginia, the most expensive market in the country, while $116,800 sits in Arizona, Georgia, Indiana and Texas. The floor tracks the experience bar, not the metro.

Is commissioning engineer the right title to search for? Only half the time. Owners and field services firms say commissioning engineer. Design and MEP consultancies say commissioning agent or commissioning authority, and the standards bodies say commissioning authority or commissioning provider. Search all four phrases.

The verdict from this table is that the step that pays is the step out of individual contributor work. Going from a five year commissioning engineer band to an area manager band moves the floor by $19,200 and the ceiling by $24,000. No certification and no city move does anything like that. Read the years in BASIC QUALIFICATIONS before you read the band, because that is what moves the floor.
