Data Center MEP Engineer Salary 2026: What Employers Post by Discipline

Search for a data center MEP engineer salary and you hit a wall fast. The number is hard to find because the job is hard to find. Almost nobody posts it.

MEP stands for mechanical, electrical and plumbing. It is a useful shorthand for a scope of work. It is not what employers call a person. Design firms hire one discipline at a time and grade each one by level. Builders hire an MEP coordinator and call that person a project engineer, a project manager or a superintendent.

That split is the whole reason this pay question is confusing, and it is the first thing this page fixes. Every figure below carries the requisition number and the date it was read. Nothing here comes from a crowd-sourced salary site.

Nobody posts a job called MEP engineer

We counted. On September 25, 2026 we searched the careers boards that the largest MEP design firms and the largest data center owner run themselves. Here is what came back.

Read the last two rows together. The word MEP reaches a job title in American data center work in one place: construction management. Mortenson builds data centers, and somebody has to coordinate the mechanical, electrical and plumbing trades on site. That person gets MEP in the title.

The firms that draw the systems in the first place never use the word in a title. Syska Hennessy is one of the biggest names in US mission critical design. Its critical facilities group had roughly two dozen engineering openings on the day we looked, every one of them naming a single discipline.

So the honest version of the question is not “what does an MEP engineer make.” It is “what does a mechanical engineer make on data centers, what does an electrical engineer make, and what does the person coordinating both on site make.” Those are three different numbers and the rest of this page gives them.

One caveat on the counts above, because it matters. Each one is a zero or a one for that exact search on that exact board on that day. Amazon’s job search returns roughly nine or ten job objects against hit counts in the hundreds, so its lists are a floor, never a census. A firm could open an MEP Engineer requisition tomorrow. What the counts show is that the title is rare enough that no one should be pricing a career off it.

What employers actually printed, by requisition

Every row below was opened and transcribed on September 25, 2026. Amazon prints no dollar sign and no posting date on its job pages, so its bands appear exactly as the site shows them.

The spread from top to bottom is $84,100 to $300,000, and a number in the middle of that would describe nobody. The rows are sorted by ceiling so you can see what actually separates them, which is years asked for and whether a licence is on the table.

Data center mechanical engineer salary

The mechanical side owns cooling. On a data center that means chilled water, air handling, direct-to-chip liquid loops and the controls that hold a room inside a narrow temperature band.

The federal anchor is the Bureau of Labor Statistics median for mechanical engineers, $104,110, from May 2025 data published in the Occupational Outlook Handbook. BLS counts 298,500 mechanical engineering jobs and projects 11 percent growth from 2025 to 2035. That figure covers every mechanical engineer in the country, from car plants to HVAC design. BLS does not break out data center work, and its industry table for this occupation does not list data processing or hosting at all.

Employer postings sit above it. Black & Veatch asks 5 years and an active PE licence for its data center mechanical role and prints $126,423 to $249,522 for California offices. Syska Hennessy asks 8 years plus 3 supervisory for a senior mechanical engineer in critical facilities and prints $104,953 to $152,430 in Chicago and $110,784 to $166,176 in Boston.

Those two firms are not disagreeing about the market. They are describing different jobs. The Black & Veatch role is an engineer of record on hyperscale design. The Syska role runs a team. Compare the years and the licence line before comparing the money.

Data center electrical engineer salary

Electrical is the bigger half of the money and the bigger half of the postings. On Syska Hennessy’s board we counted 22 electrical engineering titles against 9 mechanical, better than two to one.

The federal anchor here is $120,630, the BLS median for electrical engineers, May 2025 data, 8 percent projected growth 2025 to 2035. Watch the label on that one. BLS reports electrical engineers and electronics engineers separately, at $120,630 and $130,220, and the combined occupation median it prints at the top of the page is $125,040. A page quoting $120,630 as “electrical and electronics engineers” has the wrong label.

Posted bands for data center electrical work run higher and much wider. Olsson asks 12 years and a PE for an Electrical Engineer Expert on data centers and prints $140,000 to $300,000 against a single remote US range. Black & Veatch asks 5 years and prints $114,930 to $230,328. Amazon asks 6 years for a senior electrical engineer and prints 136,600.00 to 184,800.00 USD annually.

A $160,000 band like Olsson’s is too wide to average. The floor is the number to negotiate against, because it is the one the employer has committed to in writing.

Plumbing engineer salary: the gap in the middle of MEP

The P is the letter with no number behind it, and that is worth saying out loud rather than filling in with a guess.

Start with the federal side. There is no Standard Occupational Classification code for a plumbing design engineer. We read the full engineer list under SOC major group 17-2000 and none of the eighteen entries covers it. A plumbing designer falls into 17-2199, Engineers, All Other, which has no Occupational Outlook Handbook profile and therefore no published median. The trade code 47-2152, plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters, has a May 2025 median of $63,800 and 7 percent projected growth, but that is an installation trade with a high school entry requirement. It is a different job and it is not a substitute.

Now the employer side. Black & Veatch does not run a plumbing engineer requisition on data centers. It folds the work into the mechanical title: requisition 112288 is called Mechanical Engineer, HVAC/Plumbing, Data Centers, and its description says the role designs “HVAC and plumbing systems for primarily HyperScale and Colocation Data Center design associated with administrative and support spaces.” One title, one band, two of the three letters.

Syska Hennessy does post a standalone Senior Plumbing Engineer, in Los Angeles and in New York. Both sit in its buildings group, not in its critical facilities group. So the one firm on this list that treats plumbing as its own discipline does not point that discipline at data centers.

Put plainly: there is no data center plumbing engineer salary to publish, because no federal programme measures the occupation and the employers who do this work file it under mechanical. Anyone showing you a plumbing engineer band for data centers built it from something else.

The one credential with a published price is the Certified in Plumbing Design, issued by the American Society of Plumbing Engineers. ASPE prints the exam fee at $450 for members and $675 for non-members, and asks for four years of plumbing design responsibility plus an engineering-related bachelor’s degree, or up to eight years of practical design experience in place of the degree. ASPE publishes no salary figure for CPD holders anywhere.

MEP project engineer salary and MEP design engineer salary

These two searches point at opposite ends of a project, and only one of them returns a real American job title.

MEP project engineer is a construction title and it is real. Mortenson’s requisition 22935 in Omaha is the clearest example we found, because it prints two levels on one posting:

Two years of experience is worth $9,300 at the floor and $12,600 at the ceiling on the same posting. No licence is asked for at either level, and field experience is accepted in place of the degree.

Mortenson also prints something almost nobody else does. On the same posting it publishes its own geographic adjustment, word for word: “Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR 10%, Washington, D.C. 12.5%.” Most employers publish a band and let you guess the multiplier. This one publishes the multiplier.

MEP design engineer is the search that comes up almost empty in the United States. The only requisition carrying that exact title on Amazon’s global board is 3182492, MEP Design Engineer, Global Engineering Services, in Bangalore, asking 7 to 12 years of progressive MEP design experience. It prints no pay figure. The US design equivalent of that job is posted as Mechanical Engineer or Electrical Engineer, at the bands in the table above.

There is a related title worth knowing about. Black & Veatch runs a Data Center Detailed Design & MEP Execution Lead out of Overland Park asking 15 years minimum, with PE or architect registration preferred rather than required. It prints no band. That posting is the single reason the word MEP appears in a title anywhere in that company, out of 871 data center engineering results on its own board.

Does the city set the pay? Amazon answered both ways in one week

Comparing two job ads from two cities almost never tells you what a city is worth, because the two ads usually ask for different experience. The clean test is a single requisition that lists several cities, since the experience bar is then identical by construction.

Amazon had two such requisitions live on the same day, and they gave opposite answers.

One employer, one week, two electrical engineering requisitions. The first prices Santa Clara about 15 percent above Phoenix-area offices and moves both ends of the band, which is what a genuine cost adjustment looks like. The second pays Seattle, Northern Virginia and Atlanta exactly the same to the dollar.

Black & Veatch goes further in the same direction. Requisition 113562 prints one range, $114,930 to $230,328, and attaches it to thirteen offices including Los Angeles, Dallas and Overland Park.

The takeaway for a candidate is small and useful: a geographic adjustment is a decision made requisition by requisition, not a company-wide policy you can look up. Ask which band applies to your office before you accept, and get the answer in the offer letter. What a PE licence is worth, and what nobody will tell you

The Professional Engineer licence is the credential that matters most in this field, for a reason that has nothing to do with pay. A licensed engineer can stamp drawings. On a data center design contract somebody has to be engineer of record, and only a PE can hold that.

Employers split three ways on whether they want it, and the split is visible in the postings:

• Required. Black & Veatch 113562 and 112288 both ask for “an active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements.” Olsson 4973311008 and both Syska Hennessy senior roles require it too.
• Preferred. Amazon 10543897 lists a PE under preferred qualifications on a data center electrical engineering role paying 116,800.00 to 160,000.00 USD annually. Amazon 10558499 does the same at 136,600.00 to 184,800.00. Both are optional.
• Not asked for at all. Mortenson’s MEP Project Engineer posting names no licence and no certification at either level, and accepts field experience in place of a degree.

Nobody who issues a credential publishes what it pays

We checked the issuing bodies themselves. Every one publishes a fee schedule. Not one publishes a salary premium.

The National Society of Professional Engineers is the one body that has ever published a figure, and it is old. A press release dated August 12, 2007 says PEs earned an average of 20 percent more than unlicensed engineers, from its Engineering Income and Salary Survey. NSPE no longer publishes that survey. Its current page explaining what a PE is makes no pay claim at all.

So the honest summary is this. A PE licence decides which jobs you can hold, and several of the best-paying postings on this page will not consider you without one. Whether it adds a specific percentage to a salary is something no issuing body measures and no employer publishes. Design side against construction side: which pays more

An engineer choosing between a design consultancy and a general contractor is really choosing between two pay shapes. Here is the comparison, using only postings read on September 25, 2026 and the federal medians for the same month.

The verdict. Construction management lets you in earlier and with less paperwork. One year of experience and no licence gets you an $84,100 floor at Mortenson. Design pays more at the top, and the gate is the PE licence rather than the years. The widest band on this page, Olsson’s $140,000 to $300,000, sits behind 12 years and a licence.

Owner-side work at a hyperscaler sits in between and behaves differently from both. The licence is optional, the pay is set by an internal level the job title does not name, and the same title can carry different bands at the same time. Read the qualifications, not the title.

Is there really an engineer shortage? Check the age data

Career articles lean hard on a retirement wave: older engineers leaving faster than graduates arrive. The federal data does not show that, and it is worth seeing the actual numbers.

The Current Population Survey, table 11b, 2025 annual averages, gives median age by occupation. All employed people: 42.1. Architecture and engineering occupations: 41.9. Mechanical engineers: 41.2. Electrical and electronics engineers: 41.4. Civil engineers: 41.3. Engineers are younger than the workforce as a whole, not older.

The tails tell a mixed story and both halves belong here. Mechanical engineers aged 55 to 64 are 17.2 percent of the occupation against 16.3 percent for all workers, so slightly more. Aged 65 and over they are 5.9 percent against 6.9 percent, so slightly fewer. There is a bulge approaching retirement age, and it is small.

The real pressure is on the way in. The ACEC Research Institute report Firm of the Future: The Workforce of the Future, published October 2025, puts the annual engineering shortfall at roughly 18,000 people and counts about 10,000 fewer engineering degree completions than in 2019. It also carries a retirement figure, 184,175 engineers who retired or left the field in 2022, and it labels that figure an estimate for a good reason: ACEC took federal headcounts and applied an economy-wide retirement rate to them. It is arithmetic on everybody else’s rate, not a count of engineers.

Method matters here. Blame fewer graduates, not a wave of retirements, and you are describing something the data supports.

What we could not verify, and left out

Gaps are more useful than guesses. These are the numbers a page like this is expected to carry, and the reason each one is missing.

• A national average for a data center MEP engineer. No federal programme measures the occupation, because the occupation is not a job title. Any single national number for it was built from something else.
• A plumbing engineer band for data center work. No SOC code, no Handbook profile, and the employers fold the work into the mechanical title.
• Consulting billing rates. The only primary source that measures what a firm charges a client per hour is the Zweig Group Fee and Billing Report of AEC Firms, 2026 edition published April 15, 2026, and it costs US$895. No government or non-profit body publishes MEP billing rates. Any dollars-per-hour billing figure you see free online is unsourced.
• A certification or licence pay premium. Checked at the source. NCEES, ASPE, ASHRAE, USGBC and Uptime Institute all publish fee schedules and none publishes a salary figure.
• Cost of living conversions between metros. The Council for Community and Economic Research Cost of Living Index is real and current to the second quarter of 2026, and its metro values sit behind a membership paywall. A reader cannot check a conversion built on it, so we do not publish one.
• Signing bonuses, profit sharing, relocation and per diem. None of the postings we read printed any of these.
• Microsoft, Meta and Google bands. Microsoft’s careers site blocks automated reading, Meta’s returned a rate limit, and Google’s blocks on the first request. Several large employers on Workday-hosted boards are also unreadable, which is why this page leans on Amazon, Black & Veatch, Olsson, Syska Hennessy and Mortenson.

Rarely, in the United States. Design firms post Mechanical Engineer, Electrical Engineer or Plumbing Engineer instead. On September 25, 2026, Syska Hennessy’s board showed 50 listings and none said MEP. The word does reach construction titles, such as Mortenson’s MEP Project Engineer.

What is the average salary for a mep engineer in data centers?

There is no published average, because no federal programme measures the occupation. The nearest real anchors are the May 2025 BLS medians of $104,110 for mechanical engineers and $120,630 for electrical engineers, and posted data center bands running from $84,100 to $300,000 depending on discipline and years.

The title travels better abroad than at home. Searches for gaji mep engineer, Indonesian for MEP engineer salary, reach this page regularly, and Amazon’s only MEP-titled requisition worldwide is in Bangalore. Third, the published fee pages of the bodies that issue each credential.

No figure on this page came from Glassdoor, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Salary.com, PayScale, Levels.fyi, Comparably, Blind or LinkedIn Salary. Those sites are useful for finding openings. They are not usable for pricing a job, because a self-reported average cannot be traced to a single real offer. Where a band was needed and no employer published one, this page says so rather than filling the space.

Two limits worth stating. Amazon’s job search returns roughly nine or ten job objects against hit counts in the hundreds, so any count drawn from it is a floor rather than a census. And several large employers, including Microsoft, Meta, Google and everyone hosted on Workday, could not be read at all, so this page describes the employers whose boards are open.
